Many people desire a flat, and toned-appearing abdomen. However, despite diet and exercise, such goals sometimes are not achieved. Following weight changes, aging, pregnancy, or prior surgery, the abdomen may not have the contoured look you desire – even after attempts at diet and exercise. A Tummy Tuck, or Abdominoplasty surgery, may help you achieve a firmer and sleeker abdomen. Further, many stretch marks of the lower abdomen are often removed during a tummy-tuck surgery – particularly those below the level of your belly button (umbilicus).

Abdominoplasty surgery is not a replacement for weight loss, but may be right for you if you are physically healthy, do not smoke, and feel your tummy has loose or extra skin, fatty tissue, and weak muscles.

Although the results of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, the positive outcome can be greatly diminished by significant fluctuations in your weight. For this reason, individuals who are planning substantial weight loss or women who may be considering future pregnancies may be advised to postpone a tummy tuck.

Surgery is performed in a hospital setting, with a certified anesthesiologist present, for your safety and comfort. General anesthesia is utilized.

Tummy Tuck surgery requires an incision to be placed across the lower abdomen – near the level of where pubic hair grows. The length and exact location of the incision are reviewed during your office consultation – based upon your overall physique and the amount of extra skin and fat that is to be removed. However, the incision is generally placed very low on the abdomen – so as to be concealed by most clothing.

In addition to removing extra skin and fatty tissue of the abdomen, weakened abdominal muscles are sutured (similar to the appearance of a corset), so as to further provide a flatter and tighter abdomen. An additional incision around the belly button (umbilicus) is usually also necessary so as to remove loose/extra skin of the upper abdomen.

The incisions are closed with multiple layers of dissolvable sutures that are placed below the skin surface – so that they dissolve on their own and do not need to be removed following surgery. Further, drains are typically used during this surgery.

Your tummy tuck will result in a flatter, firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate with your body type and weight. It is expected that you will have some swelling following surgery, so that the final result may not be seen until this swelling has resolved.
